The Simming Prize was created in 1999 by the Simming League. Modeled after the Nobel Prize, the Simming Prizes were initially awarded in five categories: Internet Technology, Literature, Management, Peace, and Service. The categories were later discontinued following the 2006 Prizes, and all subsequent Prizes have been awarded without category.
After the death of Seth Cotis in 2005, the Simming League considered establishing a Seth Cotis Medal of Honor. Ultimately, they instead decided to rename the existing Simming Prize in his memory. Seth Cotis had long been a leader within the Simming League and Starfleet Legacy Alliance.
When the Simming League ceased operations, administration of the Simming Prize was transferred to Ongoing Worlds for 2011, and then to SimEnc for 2012. For 2013, responsibility for the Simming Prize was entrusted to a group of Trustees. The Trustees were later significantly reorganized after the 2019 awards. The Prizes continue to be issued on behalf of the Trustees and are not associated with a host organization.
